Our Vision

We want to talk about different aspects of film from the visual to the technical. We hope to bring to light the work the people behind the scenes do and how they bring these movies to life.

Some examples of the topics we’ll be talking about are the visuals, soundtracks and scores, experimental arthouse films, and even marketing.

Visuals

Colours, lighting and framing are some of the most important aspects in the visuals of a film. A films visuals are one of the things that can help a movie stand out amongst the crowd, they can affect the feelings of the audience, they can make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world and sometimes even guide the story to where it needs to go, all without a single word.

Soundtrack

A film’s score can greatly affect the emotions of an audience. It can make people laugh, increase the tension in a scene, make simple moments seem more epic and grandiose, and even make a scene more terrifying. It also has the potential to be iconic. Take the Jaws theme for example with its suspenseful build-up irregular chords as the shark nears its victim. It brings on a sense of terror and dread that not many other films can still do to this day.

Genre Studies

Japan has one of the oldest and largest film industries in the world. The new wave spanned from the 1950s to 1960s which changed the industry and earned international adaptation for Japanese filmmakers. New Wave movement has shaped up the Japanese cinema while providing the world with amazing poetic social realism movies. A rebel group of directors were the pathfinders behind the revitalisation of Japanese cinema. This section is going to deeply analyse the Japanese new wave by comparing the traditional Japanese films and the films during the Japanese new wave period. We will take Yasujiro Ozu, Nagisa Oshima and Seijun Suzuki’s films as examples.

Marketing

How a film is marketed can also help make a movie stand out. An example of this would be the Blair Witch Project which had realistic missing person posters with its three actors in them. They also created a website detailing the disappearances of the characters with fake news stories, interviews, images of the location the film takes place.
